Zagra

The municipality of Zagra borders the municipalities of Algarinejo and Loja, being very close to Iznajar reservoir . This town is situated at the foot of a high hill atop which you can still see the remains of an ancient castle from which there are magnificent views. Its origin, like many other southern Spanish towns and villages, is Arabic. The name comes from the word "sajra" which means rock or pit.

The main economic activity is agriculture: olive groves occupy almost the entire municipal area, except of course the town itself.

Its name, derived from the Arabic, means border. This area, which straddles the districts of mountains of Granada and Loja, was the scene like so many other places in all Western Granada, of fierce fighting between the Muslims of the Nazari kingdom and the Christian troops of the Catholic Monarchs in the latter stages of the War of Granada.

Monuments
Iglesia Parroquial (Parish Church, XVIII century).

Archaeological

Urbanism

Gastronomy

Locally produced made kid casserole and homemade sausages. Local recipes for ‘sobrehúsa’ and ‘la porra’. Among the noteworthy desserts are rosquetes, ‘roscos de viento’ (a kind of donut), and ‘borrachuelos piñonate’.
