Villaluenga del Rosario - Cádiz
Villaluenga del Rosario is a village located to the west of the province of Cádiz, in a valley between the Sierra de Libar and the Castle, in a rugged and mountainous terrain. The township is included in the and has the highest rainfall rate in the peninsula. This municipality is included within the so-called Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos.
Villaluenga has 455 inhabitants and 57 Km2. It is located to 858 metres above sea level.
From the year 716 to 1485 was occupied by Muslims, when Don Rodrigo Ponce de León, Marquis of Cádiz and the Duke of Arcos de la Frontera, robs the Arabs, thereby granting the Reyes Católicos the Lordship of the "Serrania de Villaluenga", being the capital of the seven villages, as reflected in the privilege dated in January 11,1498.
Apparently the name of "Villaluenga" was received due to its long and narrow shape which has the urban area of the town. And the "Rosario" was added later in the XVIII century, due to the entrenched professed devotion of its inhabitants to the Virgen del Rosario, under whose sponsorship was made after this date.
