Torvizcón

Torvuzcon can be found in the southern part of the ‘Alpujarra Granadina’ (Granada province), southeastern Spain. It borders the municipalities of La Taha, Almegíjar, Cástaras, Albondón, Sorvilán, Polopos and Órgiva.

As for the history of the town, it must be said that Torvizcon dates back to the Roman era, when it was known as Turidianum, later to become Torvizcón. Its history has paralled the destiny of so many other villages of the Alpujarras, a region which, because of its geographical isolation, has always developed its own independent culture, which had its moments of splendour during the Arab Andalusian period, when all Alpujarran agriculture was a major emporium specializing in silk production. During the late seventeenth, through the eighteenth and part of the nineteenth centuries it was at the head of the party upon which the title of Villa (town) was bestowed. In the sixteenth century there were already written comments on its existence, with emphasis on their use of irrigation water and wells. The village of Torvizcón grew to a large number of cortijos (farmsteads) during the nineteenth century.
