Sierro

Sierro is a beautiful town located in La Sierra de los Filabres, belonging to the Alto Almanzora. Its urban structure recalls his Arab origin and, in many cases resembles the villages of the Alpujarra.

In the early Middle Ages the inhabitants of La Sierra de los Filabres were mostly Mozarabic, Christians claimed to the peace treaty of 713. In 1125 most of them went away with the King Alfonso el Batallador to settle the Valle Ebro.

With the expulsion of the Moors, five hundred years later, Sierro is repopulated with neighbours coming from Murcia and Albacete, and to a less number from Castilla and the rest from Andalucía.

In the XV century it could be distinguished between Sierro and El Bajo. Its name seems to have its origin in the Latin word serra, which means mountain or mountain range, although some specialists suggest its possible Berber origin.
