Puerto Moral

A municipality belonging to the judicial district of Aracena, and included in the National Park of the Sierra de Aracena and los Picos de Aroche, one of the most important protected areas of the community which occupies the entire north of the province with its meadows and small hills covered predominantly with oak forests, cork trees, chestnut trees and scrub, where numerous streams flow, forming a place of extraordinary beauty. It is ideal for livestock, especially for the Iberian pig, which finds the conditions ideal.

Within the town centre itself, you can find the Church of S. Pedro and S. Pablo, which has been declared a site of Cultural Interest. Also of interest are the Chapel of the Saviour, and the extraordinary sight of the "Embalse de Aracena".

Within its borders you can find burial sites dating back some four thousand years, in the area known as San Salvador. There are also remnants of Roman culture, and Visigoth remains dating from the fifth to seventh centuries.
The origin of the village dates from the time of reforestation, carried out by Christian settlers, from Galicia and Leon, or from the subsequent Castilian period. Tradition says that the origin of the village comes from the establishment of a "venta" next to a mulberry tree, which gave the town its present name.

This humble centre became a dependency of Aracena, and as such was bound to its fate.

Puerto Moral became independent in 1817 granted the title of town by King Fernando VII.

The slow demographic decline suffered by this population during the first half of this century was halted in the sixties, thanks to the impact of the construction of the dam in Aracena, 5 kilometres from town. The jobs that these works promoted allowed the growth in population of one of the smallest municipalities in the province, during the decade in which the decline in population hit rural mountain areas the hardest.
