Polopos
Polopos sits on a sunny slope near the Haza del Lino, in the heart of the Sierra de la Contraviesa. The municipality has four towns: Polopos and Haza del Trigo, on the Sierra coast, and two on the coastal strip: Castillo de Baños, situated on a small plain called Puerta de Baños, on the delta of the Rambla del Trigo, and La Mamola, at the foot of a hill topped by a watchtower.
During the nazari epoch Polopos would have belonged to the Grand Cehel taha, whose head was Almegíjar . After the fall of the Muslim kingdom of Granada , the king Boabdil was allowed a large part of the Alpujarra which included Polopos by the Catholic Monarchs, as part of his surrender treaty; this territory would revert to the Crown of Castile when Boabdil retired to North Africa.
Nineteenth century documents refer to Polopos, and describe it as a prosperous place through the production of grapes, wines and spirits.
