Pampaneira
Pampaneira is situated 72 km from Granada, at the entrance of the Barranco del Rio Poqueira, which rises at the foot of the highest peak on the Iberian Peninsula, Mulhacén (3,482 m.).
From the town’s position in the Barranco del Poqueira, at a height of 1050 m. above sea level, you can enjoy on one side a unique view side of the peak of Veleta (3,392 m) and on the other, of the towns of and .
Pampaneira borders the municipalities of , , La Taha, , and Soportújar.

The name Pampaneira is of Latin origin, coming from ‘pampinus’ which means a branch, and certainly alludes to the greenery of the land irrigated by the river Poqueira.
The history of the region where Pampaneira stands parallels that of many other regions in the Alpujarras, a region which, by its geographical isolation, has always developed its own independent culture, which had its moment of splendour in the Arab-Andalusian period, when all the Alpujarra was an important agricultural emporium specializing in silk production.
After the conquest of Granada (1492) by the Catholic Monarchs, the population was gradually subjected to a pressure that eventually became intolerable, and in 1568 a wealthy landowner in the area, Hernando de Valor, who took the name Aben Humeya, took up arms against Philip II, prompting a revolt among the Moors from the kingdom of Granada. Unfortunately, internal dissent among the Moors, ended with the killing of Abén Humeya (1569), which allowed Don Juan de Austria to deal quickly with the uprising. The Moors would be permanently expelled in 1609.
The growth of the current town actually had its origins in the sixteenth century, when the town and lands were repopulated by families of the kingdoms of Leon and Galicia.

Pucheros, stews, casseroles, soups, migas, various sausages, Moorish sweets, and, above all, the dish ‘Alpujarras’, 'invented' and served for the first time in one of the restaurants of Pampaneira. It is an ideal dish to recharge your batteries after a long walk around the area, patatas a lo pobre with peppers and onions, also fried eggs, ham, pork, blood sausage and chorizo.

Pampaneira can be reached via the A-44 direction Armilla-Motril. Take exit 164, then connect with the A-348. Once through the town of Orgiva, take the route GR-421, which leads to the centre of Pampaneira.
