The Montillana municipal area has known human settlement from prehistoric times, although no proof, in archaeological terms, has been found to prove this. ontillana was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs on their triumphant march to Granada, but also had several episodes of rebellion by the Moors in the sixteenth century and suffered the consequences of depopulation caused by their eventual defeat and subsequent expulsion. It is predominantly an agricultural area, and now has a magnificent mill, and is well known for the production if quality oil.
