Montillana

Montillana is situated in the province of Granada, on the border of the western edge of the Hoya de Guadix, in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, Spain. It is located to the north of the provincial capital, about 51 kilometres distant.

The Montillana municipal area has known human settlement from prehistoric times, although no proof, in archaeological terms, has been found to prove this. Its foundation as an urban nucleus corresponds to a time of Muslim rule in Spain and it always suffered the consequences of its geographical position, being a frontier region, especially from the harassment for years from the Christian soldiers who were then quartered in Baeza.

ontillana was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs on their triumphant march to Granada, but also had several episodes of rebellion by the Moors in the sixteenth century and suffered the consequences of depopulation caused by their eventual defeat and subsequent expulsion. It is predominantly an agricultural area, and now has a magnificent mill, and is well known for the production if quality oil.

Monuments

Iglesia Parroquial de Santa Ana (Parish Church of Santa Ana)

Gastronomy

Maize casserole, migas, pork loin, sausages ‘en orza’, Tortas de Carda. Montillana also produces good quality oils, and exquisite homemade desserts. As a curiosity try migas with melon.
