Lecrín - Talará

The municipality of Lecrín was formed by the union of 6 villages: Acequias, Mondújar, Talara, Béznar, Murchas and Chite. (The first five joined in 1967 and Béznar joined in 1973). The Ayuntimiento (city hall) is currently in Talara.

The municipality of Lecrín forms part of Sierra Nevada Natural Park.

The discovery of Roman baths dating from the mid first century to the early fourth century shows that the origins of the town go back to that era. However, it was with the Arabs when Lecrín reached its zenith. Due to the status as a mainly agricultural enclave, without defenses of any strategic importance, the town did not suffer too much hardship in the war of reconquest and the subsequent uprising of the Moors. After the defeat and expulsion of the Moors the region was badly depopulated and the mainstay of agriculture considerably weakened. Soon after this expulsion, Lecrín was repopulated with Christians from other kingdoms of Spain, but later still, in the nineteenth century; the town once again became depopulated because of emigration and several epidemics.
