Láchar

Lachar is a municipality located in the northwestern part of the Vega de Granada (province of Granada), Andalusia (Spain). It borders the municipalities of Fuente Vaqueros, Cijuela and Pinos Puente. Other nearby towns are Chauchina, Valderrubio and Romilla. Parts of its boundaries are the rivers Genil and Noniles, and the mouth of the river Cubillas is close to the middle of the Lachar municipality.

The  lachareño municipality consists of Lachar and Peñuelas, and the main productive activities are construction, various industries with agriculture becoming less and less important.

The municipality has its origin mainly in the Islamic period, reaching high levels of population because of the privileged status, having good agricultural land. In 1431, shortly before the battle of Higueruela, Constable Álvaro de Luna attacked the town to prevent the supplying of food to Granada . After the war, the Catholic Monarchs ceded control of the municipality to Canaveral Fernán Sánchez Fernández de Córdoba, Field Commander of Ferdinand of Aragon and founder of the Estate of Benalúa. Currently Lachar continues to maintain its status as an agricultural town.
