Jubrique - Genal Valley - Serranía de Ronda

Jubrique stretched through the Eastern slope of Bajo Genal in the region of Serranía de Ronda. Its territory is full of hills covered by olive groves, chestnut trees and vines, while in the depth of the streams and above all in the banks of the river Genal, we can also find small vegetable gardens with fruits and vegetables.

The city centre of Jubrique is located over a mountainous rise in which its streets and houses have to adapt to this kind of land. Jubrique preserves the traditional appearance of the villages in the mountainous region with narrow and steep streets, in which sides there are ground houses with whitewashed facades. Jubrique has several religious buildings with a popular and historic interest such as the Church of San Francisco de Asis (XVI century), the most characteristic monument of Jubrique. We can observe the spots of Charco Picao, the Estrecho, and the hermitage of Castañuelo, the hermitage of Santa Cruz del Chorrillo, the Vegedas, theTomilla and the valley of the river Genal which are places with a great interest in Jubrique because of its landscape.

The most ancient papers that exist about the history of Jubrique date from the XVII century; however, like a settlement it dates from distant times. In a farm called El Tesoro, to 4 kilometres from the village, there were found pieces of pottery and other remains of a village and its necropolis such as a tomb with jewellery and other tools that should be the trousseau of the deceased who was buried there. These ways of burial were typical of the Phoenician village, being later used by the natives with whom Jubrique lived with.

From the Arab domination, we only can find a tower, adjacent to the Parish Church, which it is supposed it was the minaret of the mosque.

Its Arab name was Inz-Almaraz, which was changed by Ximera de Líbar after the Christian conquest, name that you can find in a Stone of the public spring, dated in 1789.

Gastronomy

The most traditional dishes in Jubrique are the stew of fennels, the hot gazpacho, the cod and young garlic omelettes, just as the slaughtering meat and the dried meat. We can drink a delicious grape juice wine, produced with grapes of the field. In confectionery, Jubrique has tasty sweets such as the hijuela, cooked with flour, egg, oil and honey.

How to get there

By the road AP-7 (N-340) you arrive in Estepona, and in this village you have to take the Motorway A-557 until Jubrique. It is a local road with stretches of many bends but with a beautiful landscape. If you leave from Ronda, you have to take the Motorway A-376 and then take the Motorway A-369 until Algatocín, where you have to take MA-536, which leads you to Jubrique.
