Jerez del Marquesado

Jérez del Marquesado is part of Natural Park of Sierra Nevada, on the northern slopes, and is one of the most picturesque villages in this mountainous area which the Arabs called ‘el Sened’.

Its origins date back to prehistoric times, specifically to the Neolithic age with remains of the Argar culture having been found, and mining operations from the Bronze Age which continued through to Roman times. The area was called Sericis by the Romans, the Arabs called it Mecina or Alcazar (castle) and Xeriz (Silk) because of the coexistence of two villages. Mecina had the older local population, and Xeriz had the Moors. The dominance of the Moors and the integration with the local population took place in the twelfth century, the area, having abundant water, became an important place where the kings of Granada owned vast estates.
