Itrabo
Itrabo can be found on the ‘Costa Granadina’, located south of the foothills of the Sierra del Chaparral, lying on the strip of land that runs between the Loma de Boijar and Morro del Calar, the borders of the municipality are to the south of the Barranco del Medio, only a few metres from the Mediterranean coast.
Ancient civilizations like the Phoenicians came to the region to trade.
The regions ‘glory days’ were certainly during the Muslim period. The Legado Andalusi routes ran through the town, particularly those of Leon del Africano and Al-Idrist.
Itrabo still retains a somewhat Moorish feel, despite the passing of the years, with whitewashed houses, and narrow streets with many interesting and charming places to explore.
As evidence of Muslim influence that permeates a visit to the Ermita de la Virgen de la Salud is a must, here is where you can enjoy the perfect integration of an agricultural landscape into rural areas, and where you can see one of the best examples of the concept of Islamic gardens, with a beautiful flourishing garden.
In the 16th century, after a long period of hostilities with the Christian forces, the Moors were defeated and expelled from the region, causing the widespread depopulation of the area.
Over many of the latter centuries, the region suffered badly from repeated attacks by the Barbary pirates, although, in the second half of the 20th century, with the development of rural tourism and tropical plant cultivation, the economy of Itrabo went from strength to strength.
In Itrabo there was a centuries old tradition of wine pressing, dating back to the 18th century, currently two only can be seen in the town, one of which is the oldest known, although both of these are now in ruins.

Wine is at the centre of the gastronomy of the town. The vineyards are considered to be of very good quality.
