Frigiliana - Malaga

Situation

The village of Frigiliana is located to the east of the comarca (region) of Axarquia, in the foothills of the Sierra de Almijara. The village is over 430 metres above sea level, is 56 kilometres from the capital of the province and only 6 from Nerja . The area records an average annual rainfall of around 600 l/m2 and the average temperature is 18 º C
The town is a maze of narrow, cobblestone streets lined by whitewashed houses with wrought iron balconies filled with pots of bright red geraniums. Small plazas provide shady seating while the village bars are popular with visitors who come here to taste the locally produced wine. There are also several excellent shops selling pottery and ceramics, including decorative plates with their distinctive Arab design.

Gastronomy

If there is any dish that identifies the culinary art of Frigiliana, it must be “el choto”, (kid) this product of the region often includes a variety of sauces.
Dishes from typical axarqueña cooking can be found in Frigiliana in many local varieties that differ from the rest of the region. Thus, dishes like cabbage, fennel or those of Semana Santa (Easter), the latter being based on bacalao (cod), along with flour tortillas dipped in egg and molasses, is considered a typical characteristic menu of the religious celebration to which it owes its name.
“Arropia and las Marcochas Arropía” represent a basis of local pastry cooking. The main ingredient of these sweets is cane honey and rich “arropía”.
But while all the cooking uses exclusively locally sourced natural products, mostly from local production, such as olive oil or molasses, not to be missed are the local wines known as “vinos del terreno” with differing types, tones and strengths, which can be tasted in Frigiliana.

How to get there

Take the Autovia Mediterraneo (A-7, N-340) towards Motril and shortly before Nerja turn onto the MA-105, which leads straight to Frigiliana.
