Freila
Freila is the smallest of all municipalities of the altiplano (plateau), a pretty village of whitewashed houses and caves sheltered by the remains of an ancient Muslim fortress dating from around the XII and XIII centuries.
The existence of numerous cave dwellings in the town and its historical links to the entire region of , suggest that has had human settlement from prehistoric times but has no specific known archaeological sites. Freila suffered firstly from the war of Reconquista, later from rebellion of the Moors, then, and finally the expulsion of the Moors after the victory of Don John of Austria over the land of the ‘alpujarreñas’. The area never supported a large population, although it is supposed that during the Islamic period the population was somewhat larger than at present.

Gastronomy
Gurullos, gachas, gurupina casserole, rich and sweet dessert cakes or ‘las tortas de chicarrones’. Many dishes of fresh fish from the Negratín reservoir. Freila has a high production of quality extra virgin olive oil.
