Felix

Felix is a village nestled in the eastern part of the Sierra de Gador, in open barren mountain terrain, where mountain springs provide cool clear water for the people. The main attractions of the area are its tranquility, picturesque architecture, clean narrow winding streets, the typical white painted houses, pure clean air, and hospitable and friendly people.

The origins of Felix date back to the Muslim era, and in the eleventh century Muslim literature appears in Sant Afliy, the chief town of the municipality, which had a farming and ranching community, and was important in the defense of Almería. The municipality, at the time, was called”La Taha de Almexixar” or “The Remepipar Taha” and now comprises the municipalities of Felix, Enix and Vicar.

Among its cultural attractions is the Church of the Incarnation, built in the XVI century on the site of the ancient Arab mosque which can be found in Plaza de la Libertad, (Liberty Square.)

This church has been declared, by the Junta de Andalucía, to be of cultural interest, and was completely restored in 1995.

Felix has a castle dating from the eleventh century, belonging to Zugayba, grandfather of the king of Granada, Abd Allah, which has been recently restored. The castle is perched on a vantage point from which can be seen a magnificent landscape, ranging from the Cabo de Gata to the area West Almeria.

Other scenic spots include the shrine, dedicated to San Roque, patron of the town and the Plaza de la Libertad (Liberty square).

Felix has a spring whose waters are pure and healthy, and quite famous throughout the province of Almeria, but drinking water comes from reservoirs in the Sierra de Gador.

Also worthy of mention is the Cerro de la Matanza, near the village, which is named after an event which happened during the revolution of the Moors in 1568. Here there was a bloody battle between the troops of the Marquis of Vélez and the Moors. The Moorish population, not wanting to submit to Christianity, committed suicide, by jumping off a cliff (according to legend.)

Arroz a banda, (local rice dish) Ajoblanco, (White garlic stew). Migas (Dish of breadcrumbs)  Encebollao. Moraga sardines. Tarbinas.
