Faraján - Málaga - Genal Valley

Faraján is located at the headwaters of the river Genal to 641 metres above sea level. Its municipal district has an area of 20 km2 and a population of 319 inhabitants.

Faraján borders on Alpandeire, Júzcar, Jubrique and Atajate.

Faraján is a very mountainous region and little suitable for the farming jobs from what in this village predominates the cattle farming, especially the one of pigs and the goat. However in both Banks of the river is abundant the chestnut, the pine tree and meadows of holm oaks and cork oaks.

The origins of Faraján go back to the Arab age and its name means “leafy or delightful place” when Faraján was a rest place. After Christian conquest, the village was deserted being repopulated by Christian families. After the War of Independence against the French (1.814), Faraján received the title “Villa” because of its courage and loyalty.
