Christ of Mercy

Juan de Mesa, attribute to the Seville school.
The image belongs to the El Silencio brotherhood, which was founded in 1929.
The brotherhood participates in the Easter Week processions at midnight on Wednesday until the small hours of Maundy Thursday. The procession is known locally as `El Silencio´ and the image was commissioned for the oratory used by Diego de Ontiveros, the Colligates canon.
The procession is renowned for the silence, recollection and respect that surround the Christ, illuminated only by the light of the penitent’s candles and accompanied by their solemn banging of one drum. The image is carried by eighteen `costalero´ men hidden underneath the float. The nazareno penitents wear black tunics and pointed hoods with a cincture in the brotherhood’s color. A recommended sport to view this procession is on its descent of the Cuesta de los Cipreses.
