Cullar

Cúllar can be found to the north of the province of Granada, in a lush valley rich in fruit trees, which runs parallel to the Sierra de Orce y de las Estancias.

The climate of Cúllar is typically continental, with large fluctuations in temperature; from 0 degrees in winter to more than 30 degrees in mid-summer. Rainfall distribution is irregular and scarce. The dry climate and extreme temperatures are a factor in causing the gradual desertification of the land. The west wind is certainly dominant but in spring and summer east winds are a significant factor in the high temperature and intensity, and are certainly detrimental to agriculture.

The municipality of Cúllar has seen human settlement since prehistoric times as evidenced by the objects found at archaeological sites, dating to the Bronze Age.

Chronicles claim that in 985 Almanzor camped here and since then the region passed through the various stages of the kingdoms of Murcia or the Granada Nazari, until in 1484 it was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs, although El Zagal, four years later, razed and burned the town. Definitely Christian, the town was dependent on Baza by royal charter, but, in 1620, it was granted the privilege of an independent municipality. Before this the town had suffered serious repression for having supported the Moorish uprising and was seriously depopulated and almost deserted.

The Idol of Malagon was discovered here, this was a statue made of ivory dating back to the Copper Age.

Due to its long Moorish past there are still many Moorish fiestas, as well as the more recent Christian.
