Capileira

Capileira is located in one of the most exceptional open space in Granada: the Barranco de Poqueira. This place, classed like a historic-artistic set, is located in the south slope of Sierra Nevada and is part of the Natural Park. It is at the foot of the summit Veleta, and that fits in its hillsides the villages Capileira, Bubión and Pampaneira. Capileira has splendid spots, with lush vegetation and exceptional sights. From the rails of the Mirador, over the gully, it can be observed the neighbouring villages, Sierra Nevada, and in sunny days, some African top and the Mediterranean sea. The Eras de Aldeire or the refuge which is at a height of 2.500 metres are other of the touristic charms of Capileira, an ideal village from which you can go on trips, with the proper cautions, to the peaks of the Mulhacén and the Veleta..

Its name comes from the Latin term capitellaria, derives from capitellum, which means tops. The fact that, after the expulsion of the Moorish, Felipe II will order repopulate its district with people who came from Galicia has supposed that the name Capileira could be due to the new settlers of Galicia, however during the Arab control there were these names with its present denomination, because they are pre-Islamic endings (Ibn Almuedzín wrote his Crónica de Pocaira in the XIII century and Ibn Aljatib in the XIV century collect names ended is eira, even they are mentioned in the Capitulaciones between Boabdil and the Catholic Monarchs).
