Brenes - Seville

Brenes is a town from Sevilla, Andalucía, Spain. In 2005 it has 11.412 inhabitants. It has an area of 22 km² and a population density of 518,7 inhabitant /km². Its geographical coordinates are 37º 33' N, 5º 52' W. it is located at a height of 18 metres and is 22 kilometres from Sevilla.

The origins of this village belong to the Visigoth age, in which the history says that it was a Benedictine monastery "Hard Waters", there lived a nun who was named Saint Verenne, or Berenia. Her grave was a place of popular pilgrimage, even during Arab times.
Romans called this place Qulumbira, because of the presence in this place of many doves. Later Arabs called it Billa Nuva, Al-Bahroyyin or Bahries farmhouse.

The present name of Brenes appears for the first time during the Reconquest , Mozarabs called the village "Berené". It is likely that this name comes from Saint "Verene". "Brenes" appears in XVIII century Repartimiento (it was a colonial forced labor system imposed upon the indigenous population of Spanish), belonging both to the Infant don Fabrique and the Chapter of the Cathedral, until the "manors" were abolished.

It is thought that the conquest by Fernando II armies took place in 1246 or 1247. Brenes was surrendered to the King of Castilla because of a vassalage pact. Later, Brenes was surrendered by Alfonso X to D. Fadrique, and then, it was the property of the cathedral of Sevilla.
