Arquillos

Arquillos is located in the region of El Condado, North of the province, in a fertile valley at the foot of Sierra del Acero and in the foothills of Sierra Morena. The village of El Porrosillo belongs to this town. This township is at a height of 380 metres, although it rises 750 metres in the top Sierra del Acero. It has an area of 66´05 km2 and a population of 1908 inhabitants. It borders on the North and West with Vilches, on the East with Navas de San Juan and on the South with Sabiote. Arquillos is located as you enter the Comarca del Condado, in Jaén.

It is a natural Place of Condado and was established in XVIII century, inside the plan of New Towns of settlement in Sierra Morena, carried out by the minister Carlos III Olavide.

The legend tells that the traveller Cosme de Médicis was in Arquillos.

It belonged to the duchy of Arcos.

In this small town was captured the general Riego.

Gastronomy

We can emphasize some dishes like the torta galianera de los pastores, stewed in the broth of some hunting food that is known such as "gachas tortas"; the "ajoharina", ratatouille of garlic, water and flour; the stew called "leche pájaro" with La Mancha influence that consists of garlic, chorizo and fried bacon with a little flour, ground pepper and pieces of bread; the salmorejo with cumin that is known like "atascaburros"; the ajillo bacalao and the pickling partridge.

With regard to sweets, we can mention the pericones called "pericones de San Antón" (legency that left the Moorish) and the "huevos moles", white of eggs and beated again with a syrup of castor sugar.

How to get there

You have to exit Jaén and continue through the road J-14. In the roundabout, take the exit 2 and continue through the road E-902 / A-44 towards Bailén - Madrid. Take the exit towards: Exit 3 - Bailén - A-32 - Linares - Albacete - Ubeda. In the roundabout, take the exit 1 and continue through the Motorway A-32 / N-322 towards: Linares - Albacete - Úbeda. Take the exit towards: Exit 116 – Linares then take the Motorway A-312 until you get Arquillos.
