Ardales is in the region of Antequera, bordering on Ronda and Valle del Guadalhorce. The town is 62.5 km from Malaga city and is 454 metres above sea level.

The presence of prehistoric man left important traces in many parts of the municipality, particularly those found in the Cueva de Doña Trinidad Grund.
