Arboleas - Almería

Arboleas is a town that belongs to Almería. It has 1.782 inhabitants and is located in the Valle del Almanzora, to 120 kilometres from the capital.

The municipal area of Arboleas has an area of 66,05 Km2. The city centre is at Latitude 370 21' North and at Longitude 20 04' West, to 272 metres above sea level.

Its inhabitants are called Arboleanos.

Its mains productive activities are: Almazaras (Olive-oil mills), almonds, citrus and nowadays it has strength the building and an Industrial Area in expansion.

Maybe its name remember us that in other times its municipal area was planted with woods and groves. The origin of its name can come from, according to Simonet, an Arab writer who was born in this town in the XIV Century, quoted by Aben Aljatib, called Abu Ben Abdalacis Al Arboli. The gentilicio (name of the inhabitants of a country) Al Arboli would form Arbolaya or Arborea, nowadays Arboleas.

This town knows the human trace very soon because there are known settlements from the prehistoric age, like we can observe in the sites of Casablanca and Maimí. We do not know many from the Roman and Al-Andalus period. We only can say that in 1488 it was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs together with other towns from the Almanzora.

During the Moorish uprising in 1568 this town took an active part. According to Mármol and Carvajal, it fighted the battle of El Corral de Arboleas.

There are some farmhouses and small villages scattered throughout such as: Casablanca, Perla, El Prado, La Judea, El Campillo, La Cueva, San Roque, Los Higuerales and Limaria.
