Alicún - Almería

This is a small town located in the Northern sides of Sierra de Gádor, in a rough landscape from what stands out, like a garden, the terraced balconies with luxuriant green. Among these we can see the town made up of terraced houses, typical from the architecture in Almería.

Nowadays Alicún is a quiet and pleasant town, preserving alter five centuries its Muslim mark, that we can observe in the shapes of the chimneys like oriental lanterns with an exquisite taste and simplicity.

During the Middle Ages it is considered a neighbourhood of Huécija, Alicún, that obtained its own entity like a town in the XVI century, had, like the rest of the region, the farming prosperity of Al Andalus, the later crisis to the expulsion of the Moriscos and the peak of the vineyard, nowadays in the process of substitution.

The citrus, other fruit trees and the garden products achieve the half of the farming production of a town which is changing that, however, has a marked Arab structure from its same location, in the hillside of the mountain range and with a perfect view of the valleys that that are located just opposite, the ones of El Andarax and El Nacimiento, as if, besides an orchard, it was a watchtower.

Seen from the valley, Alicún has one of the most curious profiles of the towns in Almería: it is similar to an orchard and, if we would imagine it uniformly painted with some loud colour, even a flower. In Alicún, indeed, vegetable garden and town seems to be exactly the same.

This town, like the rest of the towns, has the most valuable good in the South cultures, the water that flows from a hot spring that was used during the Roman Age and that marked the Muslim Alicún. These "baños huecijanos" are the core of the history of the town, firstly Roman springs, later Arab hamman and always an obvious proof that the mountain range gave the man with the necessary things to build his life.
