Alhaurín el Grande - Valle del Guadalhorce - Málaga

Located on the northern slope of the Sierra de Mijas, overlooking the beautiful Guadalhorce Valley, its territory is populated by citrus orchards and gardens. The Arabs called it "Alhaurin", and the Catholic Monarchs added "el Grande" ("the Great") to distinguish it from its neighbour Alhaurín de la Torre. The best things to see are the sites of the river Fahala, Barranco Blanco with its waterfalls and lakes, set in rugged landscape, the viewpoint of the Cuesta de la Palma, and the golf course

The town of Alhaurin el Grande has characteristics which fall within the familiar Mediterranean climate. It has 2,900 hours of sunshine a year. This climate prevails in most of Andalucia. There is little rain in the area, and it mostly occurs in the final months of autumn, late winter, and early spring. Average rainfall is 636 litres per square metre. Temperatures are mild throughout the year, and often cold in winter and hot in summer. The average is 17 degrees Celsius.

In the town of Alhaurin el Grande, traces have been found of different civilizations, from the very oldest to the abundant remains of Roman and Arabic culture.

The town had a Muslim presence and, to date, still holds traces of Arabic culture. Archaeological remains have been found which explain the importance of the municipality as a strategic location, especially in the watchtowers (of which little is preserved) but seem to justify an important role within the historical framework of ancient Al-Andalus.

Typical of the cuisine of Alhaurín el Grande are: Aloreña olives, allullas, bollos de aceite, cachorreñas, mojete, sausages, dumplings, gachas cachorreñas, winter gazpacho, migas, macaroons, roscos de huevo, etc.
