Adra - Almería

Adra is located in the most western zone of the province of Almeria; its shape seems to be triangular and it is crossed longitudinally by the road N-340A Cadiz - Barcelona, between the milestones  377,700 to 397.

The western side of the municipality sets the limit with the province of Granada and covers from south to north the municipalities of Albuñol and Turón.

The oriental side borders on Berja's municipality (Almeria).

The municipality of Adra is located in the foothills of the South-east of Sierra Nevada.

The orography of Adra is characterized by the existence of a set of hills and gullies beginning at sea level in the South-east vertex of the municipality, increasing their height the more we move forward  the North and the West, reaching their maximum levels at 1000 meters. The highest elevation of   960 meters stands out, and belongs to the hill of "La Pendencias and the houses of Cabañuelas”.

Adra's origin corresponds to the ancient city of Abdera, after the inquiries carried out after some excavations made in Cerro Montecristo. A colony of 49,38 meters of altitude over the sea level and considered as Property of Cultural Interest, where the Phoenicians settled themselves in the 8th century B.C.

In these excavations important remains were found, which highlight the Punic origin of the city: house structures of the 4th century B.C., materials and remains of republican Roman period, high and low imperial, basically salting rafts.

In the Greco-Roman bibliography there are plenty of literary reviews from authors as Estrabón, Plinio or P. Mela mentioning Abdera, together with another cities founded by the Phoenicians in the south peninsular coast, as Sexi (Almúñecar).
